Top tips for maintaining your boat this winter

Winter is well and truly here which means…winterising your boat!

Whether you’re planning to keep your boat in the water, store her ashore or still use her over the winter months, it’s important to take the necessary steps to look after your boat during the cold weather.

Here are Key Yachting’s top tips for winter maintenance:

  • Take any soft furnishings off the boat including cushions or bedding and store them ashore
  • Empty and deep clean any fridges, and consider turning off and leaving open until they are used again
  • Set up a dehumidifier and keep doors and lockers open to prevent moisture build up and dampening
  • Remove all lines
  • If you’re boat is staying in the water, add extra mooring lines and fenders, make sure your boat is secure in preparation for bad weather
  • Ensure all on deck electronic covers are tightly fitted
  • If your boat is in the water, then run the engine regularly. It’s worth having your engine checked if you haven’t had a service in a while.
  • Keep the fuel tanks topped up
  • Whether your boat is kept in or out of the water, make sure to check her regularly over the winter months.
